review 1: Zell is a widow who lives in Wippamunk, Massachusetts. Her husband, Nick, a news photographer, was killed while on a mission trip to New Orleans. He always did the cooking, because Zell didn't know how to cook. A year after his death she decides to try her hand at baking something for a contest she read about in a magazine, the winner will win a prize of $20,000. Zell would like to win the money and donate it to to the hurricane survivors in Nick's memory. She turns on the oven and unbeknownst to her something was in the oven and catches on fire. Zell lives in half of a side-by-side two-family home. She has new neighbors in the other half, Garrett Knox and his nine year old daughter, Ingrid. Garrett calls the fire department, and she meets Ingrid for the first time whil... moree she's sitting outside her home waiting for the smoke to clear. A few days later, Garrett knocks on her door and asks her if she'll look after Ingrid, whose babysitter had quit. Zell explains about the contest. Ingrid asks if she can join Zell with her baking and creating something really new and tasty. Taking care of Ingrid while Garrett is at class twice a week becomes a routine for Zell, and the two develop a bond. The story follows Zell and Ingrid as they try to create something warm and tasty. Many unsuccessful recipes follow, but their relationship grows. It is also a story about Zell dealing with her devastating grief, over the sudden death of her husband, Nick.I'm not sure what I think of this book. It started off a bit slow for me, but as I read on it became more interesting. It was an OK book to read, and because I like it, I am awarding it 3***.
review 2: This is an excellent book. I really like the way the author showed the many phases of grief in this young woman's life. I think it is a very realistic portrayal of what happens when someone close to us dies suddenly and unexpectedly and leaves a huge hole in our lives. I also like the way the characters are able to finally move forward, a step at a time, towards a brighter future. The whole plot is excellently written. I hope to see more books by this author. less
