review 1: I wasn't quite prepared for the academic primer in object relations theory, yet I have never read a more engaging or personable/personal account of it. As far as the graphic novel genre goes, I have not read a smarter one. As far as memoir goes, I have not read a less egocentric one. And I think what I appreciated most was the reserve, the intellectual and psychoanalytic scrim that diffused some of the more traditionally messy subject matter of memoir and made it all both so damn smart and moving.
review 2: It's a meta book! Threads of different parts of the story weave in and out, counselors and lovers come and go, all while Alison tries to understand and define her relationship with her mother. Virginia Woolf and the psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott feature pro... moreminently as do references to her father and her process of writing Fun Home (and Dykes to Watch Out For). Alison Bechdel is amazingly talented and this book did not disappoint. less
