review 1: Having more than one character and intersecting story lines seems to be the latest thing, doesn't it? But, I liked it. However, Grace (arguably the protagonist - the lynchpin of the other three characters) was the least interesting. She seemed too "put together" in contrast with the other three. The other three characters were more realistic in their flaws. It's a good read for those interested in counselling psychology and the choices we make.

This character's story line is told in a somewhat dead-pan voice, which works and w... morehich is perhaps more enjoyable against the painfully over-dramatized moments elsewhere in the book, like the scene when finding a husband with a porn magazine ends a marriage (although later, the same characters suddenly have the capacity for humour, irony, and exploratory sex). A unique part of the book is viewing events from the eyes of two characters who are therapists. Their profession makes certain enhanced analytic abilities believable. But what again comes across as unrealistic is that both only apply their trade to others, and wildly fail to personally profit from any apparent skill of introspection. There's also a strange expedition to Rwanda and Kenya that should have been condensed to leave a purposeful gap in the narrative. As written, this section leaves too many loose ends and more brittle credibility for the narrator. less
