review 1: If you loved OLDEST LIVING CONFEDERATE WIDOW TELLS ALL, or if you just love a really well-crafted story or three, get your hands on this. Gurganus is that rarest of all things, a writer of great craft who keeps his tricks to himself; it's not showy, it's just damn GOOD. His characters are completely believable, even in the middle of unimaginable circumstances, but I'm going to admit, I especially love what he does with his female characters. Strong, flawed, smart, fallible women, each one worth the ride. Get this book, ideally at Vroman's bookstore in Pasadena.
review 2: This review is difficult to write because the reasons to not like it are entirely accurate. By the end of the final novella, I realized the point of these stories was antithetical to most writi... moreng out there. The point of the style was the way these people live: slowly like the river named Lithium, which much thought to all possible interpretations of the point, and absorbing the completely unexpected into lives such as these, where the unexpected must be examined so as to explain at least why it should have been expected. These stories are not for everyone, and not to be read in a rush. If you wish to understand, then read slowly in small doses and meander on the stream of these tales. It was pleasurable in small (five pages or thereabouts) quantities. The characters were well drawn. The writing and style were strong enough that when I stopped for a day or two, I did not have to go back and re-read passages. less
