review 1: Having just finished this wonderful book I learned so much more about the people on the RMS Titanic from this wonderful poetic, visually magnificent read. It is a ready reference for all things Titanic with the informative end pages Allan Wolf provides. For example, I learned how few of the third class passengers got onto lifeboats compared to the 2nd and 1st class; and how the Carpathia which came to their rescue didn't have enough lifeboats on it either. This may seem like an obvious fact; but Wolf gives the nitty gritty details of exactly how many. I feel like I learned so much more about the people who were on the ship; the ones who didn't survive and the ones who did end up surviving. For example, the lookout who first spotted the iceberg survived for years after... moreward until he took his life. And the Lebanese girl named Jamilla moved to Florida changed her name to Amelia and got married at age 15 to a boy a few years older. The poetry flows across the page so effortlessly it reads like prose. Wolf's words create vivid visual images of the inner workings of the magnificent ship that was Titanic. If you have even a slight interest in the Titanic if you pick up this book you will learn so much more about it as well as be entertained with dynamic characters who really lived!! It is a brilliant work of historical fictional poetry.
review 2: A fascinating take on the classic Titanic tragedy, this novel in verse weaves the fate of the famous, infamous, and unknown victims together to capture a new take of the doomed voyage. With over twenty characters representing all levels of passengers from first class to steerage to crew, Wolf combines careful research with rich imagination to bring to life to all from the ship rat to the Captain Smith himself. The use of verse to tell the varied tales builds a strong connected narrative. Excellent choice for historical fiction fans especially those who love Titanic lore! less
