review 1: This book is not about a cookbook collector. The eponymous cookbook collector only plays a very small part in the story, which is actually about two sisters and the listing on the stock market of two internet start-ups during the dot com era. It also covers issues (among others) of religion, activism, belonging, relationships, trust, money, family and the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11. (For your book club: Is the WTC attack the new Holocaust? Discuss.)I didn't enjoy reading this book. Reading about the internet is boring. Having lots of characters but not exploring any of them enough to form an attachment is boring. Rich middle-aged white men are boring (and there are a few in this book). Promising me a book about cookbooks (which I love) but delivering ... morea story about internet start-ups instead is a sneaky move. I'd recommend reading something else instead of this book.
review 2: So it's a book about sisters and cooking....2 of my favorite things! Of course I would like it! I think I enjoyed this book mostly because it captured parts I like about both Berkeley, CA and New England (Cambridge/Boston, MA). There were a few other elements of the crazy dot com mania which I was less psyched about than the book store descriptions. The relationship elements were enjoyable, but a bit predictable. less
