review 1: Thanks to global warming, the oceans have risen and covered most of the land. All that's left are a scattering of islands. And that's not all that's wrong. Honor and her parents have been relocated to a new home on Island 365 that's under the strict control of Earth Mother and her Corporation. She controls everything from what jobs people can get to the color of the sky. Honor does as she's told, following all the rules at school and at home, but her parents don't. They sneak down to the shore at night, and they say bad things about Earth Mother. One day, they simply disappear.
review 2: The position is obviously an ecocritical one. Nature is worth saving. We need to save nature. But in the narrative, there is no gradient that leads the reader toward that reali
... moresation. Instead, the narrative opens with people already taking action but the problem is they take it too far. So, really, if there is a moral to be found in the story, wouldn't that moral be "don't be too extreme in taking environmentalist action?" Yet, Goodman presented the reader with no other alternative. So, let me get this straight. We don't know why exactly we have care for nature but we only know that we shouldn't care about it so much that we institute propaganda and autocracy? But, if that is not the way, then what is? This book raises some very ambivalent issues. If knowledge is power, then isn't the knowledge dispensed to them a kind of power too? I think what I'm trying to say is, I'm not entirely happy with the way ambivalence is being handled here. There are no shades of grey. Only right and wrong, good and bad. System is bad. Inward reality is good. The government feeds the people lies but they are lies that save lives. Is this not the true problem that we should consider? less
