review 1: I loved this book for the look into the psyche of post-war Croatians it provides. Buried deep beneath the surface of the story, which takes place in recent years, are the horrors of the mid-90s Croatian War of Independence. One knows they must underpin all that goes on in this quiet, out-of-the-way village that's been "invaded" by a British mom and her two kids, there to refurbish and flip an old house that has some mysterious significance to the locals. But the horrors become tangible only near the end as the primary story's tension rises and the war-time experiences of the lovable but unfulfilled narrator, Duro, rise to the surface and shed light on characters living and dead that, to this point in the novel, have been relegated to sub-plot, almost atmospheric st... moreatus.
review 2: Mooie roman over de oorlogstijd in voormalig Joegoslavië. Forna slaagt erin om de beklemming van een kleine gemeenschap waarin iedereen iedereen kent geloofwaardig neer te zetten en het conflict tegelijkertijd mooi klein te houden. De komst van de Engelse familie in het blauwe huis is de trigger die het verhaal in beweging zet en vanaf dat moment lopen de gebeurtenissen heel natuurlijk in elkaar over zonder het het een moment saai wordt. Af en toe een regieaanwijzing aan de lezer, waar ik persoonlijk niet zo van hou, maar het einde maakt dat meer dan goed. less
