review 1: I was urged to read this by friends who share my love for the novels of Per Petersen. It is similar in style and story, and also a little like Paul Yoon's magnificent SNOW HUNTERS, though not nearly as subtle, magical, or poetic (I do love that book) . . . This is a captivating, moving, suspenseful story about a man coming to terms with events in Croatia during the war and the echoes of violence that still provide the sound track to everyday life in his small village. Lovely tiny details creating full characters, minimalist prose, rather explosive subject. It feels like it's brimming with emotion barely contained. Masterful, and a non-stop read for me.
review 2: This novel blew me away. Not since Per Petterson's "Out Stealing Horses" have I been so impressed by
... more a novel. I want everyone to read it!!!!!!!!!! The prose has a stillness that is utterly compelling. And the story unfolds with such naturalness. I was completely convinced by the narrator's voice and story despite the fact that the author is English and African, not Croatian. The novel explores the effect of war on family and friend relationships in a small Croatian village. Told from a reminiscent perspective as events in the fictional present, some of them orchestrated by the narrator, bring up long buried memories. less

Not quite a 5 but more that a 4 star. It does spool out slowly, but its worth the journey.

More like 3.5. Good story about an area and time I know little of. Lovely writing.
