review 1: Gotta admit this book was not easy for me to read. Not my cup of tea. I found it a bit like being given a loaf of bread to eat with no water. That being said that by no means is a good acurate review of this book. I'm sure others who love language and love words would very much find this book intresting,packed with info, and funny. My hats off to Amos and the research and time he put into this book. I will make it my secret mission to put it in the hands of someone whom i know will enjoy it.
review 2: The authors passionately (and frequently) assert their self-defintion as atheist Jews. Secular and non-observant to the core, they sat down to explain how someone could consider themselves Jewish if they neither subscribe to any traditional Jewish beliefs nor obs... moreerve any Jewish practice, custom or ritual. What they come up with is a shared, deelply held love of books and words. As they note, time and time again, in the face of every pogrom, synagogue burning and explusion, Jews grabbed two things: their children and their books. So it is an abiding love of the texts that make up the Bible that connects Jews of every level of observance. less
