It isn’t a flashy signing but it is a smart signing that could pay dividends. The Jets brought in Quinton Patton on a one-year deal worth as much $825k.
The deal isn’t guaranteed – Only $25k of it is – so Patton will have to earn his role on the Jets roster. At the moment, there are only two receivers that likely have any certainty of making the team in week 1: Robbie Anderson and Quincy Enunwa. As such, as many as four roster spots could be available for the receivers.
Patton was drafted by the 49ers when John Morton was the WR coach in San Francisco. This signing would be a classic move by Bill Parcells – a mentor to Todd Bowles (Parcells sends Bowles a text after every game). When Parcells moved to a new team, he brought along veterans that were familiar with what his expectations were and set the tone for the team (Similar to McCown reuniting with Jeremy Bates). It remains to be seen if Patton is that kind of leader: after all he has to make the team. If he does, his two years of work with Morton can be valuable in terms of communicating the scheme, concepts and attitude for the WR group.
On the field, Patton could push for the WR 3 or WR 4 role. His strength will be in the short/intermediate passing game where he utilizes good short area quickness. He could thrive in the slot as he shows excellent awareness to find the soft spot vs zone and has the speed to outrun linebackers and safeties on crossing routes.
The past two seasons, he has averaged 30+ catches and 12 yards per reception. He could make his mark on special teams as a kick returner and a rusher on punt coverage.
At Louisiana Tech, Patton was a dynamic player. His time in the pros has not been as successful as injuries have limited him to part-time contributions.
Patton will have every opportunity with the Jets to make on-field contributions and be a solid role player for Gang Green. Where he might make is biggest mark is in the locker room. Right now, this is a smart, low cost move that can pay off big for the Jets in the long run.
