review 1: “Like‟ is a mild sort of word for what Con and I have,” Collin replied, leaning forward to touch noses with the big doofus. Constantine half-closed his eyes and twitched his whiskers back. “I’d go with the deeply twisted interpersonal relationship that a hero has for his nemesis, sort of a Batman/Joker thing, if the Joker suddenly started going down on Batman like a porn-star on Viagra.”Jeff looked at him in alarm. “Jesus, Sparky, stop touching my cat!” ― Amy Lane, Living PromisesThe tapestry of tears, love and life expands in this, the third book of the beautiful Promise Rock series by Author Amy Lane. In this installment of the saga, Carrick’s physical therapist Jeff Beachum has his part of the Happily Ever After woven into the storyline and we learn ... morethat not all is a golden as we’d like it to be. The stark, terrifying reality of AIDS, wartime, racism, and the harsh walls that intolerance can build is illumined for even the most blind among us to see. Future dreams must be rerouted, some even destroyed in the plans to take life on life’s terms in the desperate dare to hope. Never fear, however; life goes on in the form of matzo ball soup and a Scottish Fold kitten.Remember however, this is a an Amy Lane novel and as such you’re going to have to accept angst, knitting and deadly dry humor inserted at just the right time – when you’re halfway through a huge gulp of something deadly to any electronic reader you may have in your hand! The repartee is bouncy and at times will find you standing as if an interloper in an intense personal scene, forever frozen as one of ‘those’ moments that you’d rather not witness but find you cannot turn away.As the story weaves and meanders through the ever-expanding family of Promise Rock, you begin to see that everyone needs a “fairy-Jeff-father” in their lives – including Jeff. Can Collin persuade Jeff that he is the ‘other half’ to Jeff’s heart? Can the tribe of Deacon, Carrick, Jon, Bennie and Amy extend the walls of love and family to encompass even more broken people who just need the healing unconditional love can bring? Finally, if stupid people and their actions make you want to commit felonious assault on a fellow human being, then live vicariously through this very human narrative and enjoy the justice delivered in a well-placed punch to the emotional gut.
review 2: I now know why I need such a long break in between reading each of these books. The angst levels are off the scale! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book and it was probably my favourite in the series so far but my heart just couldn't take all the upset and I'd cried 3 times before I was 15% through. I just started to get over one traumatic event and take a breather, then another one would come along. However, when all is said and done this is a fantastic book, I loved Jeff and Collin and apart from Deacon and Crick I think they're probably my favourite couple. They're both such strong characters and despite having so many obstacles to overcome in their past, they learned to live life to the full and have a lot of fun in the process. Thanks to Giorgia and Steph for reading this with me! less
