review 1: Well I for one fell in love with Mackey, he was an incredible teenager who we are able to see grow up and sometimes growing up is facing reality that just truly sucks. Grant has been in love with Mackey for as long as he can remember, only problem is that he can't come out, ever. So he remains with his girlfriend Sam (which I hate) and in my opinion leads Mackey on. Man up already! The other members for the band are awesome characters as well. Great part 1 and I am off to part 2 right now.
review 2: I think reading an Amy Lane book as a serial is the way to go for me personally. I always like her writing but good grief she puts her characters through so much. Doses of pain dished out 90 pages at a time work for me. I’m consumed but not completely gutted.Part
... more1 introduces us to a group of brothers growing up poor to a single mother in a small town. They have a couple of friends who are always with them whom they consider brothers also. Well, except for Mackey and Grant. In this installment Grant who is 18 and Mackey who is 14 discover there’s more between them. Things are initiated by Grant. This could have come off as creepy but for me it did not. Grant didn’t seem predatory in any way and Mackey definitely wanted it to happen. There was obvious love and devotion between the MCs. Innocence and yearning. There was certainly more than the normal excitement and danger of sneaking private time with the one who sets you on fire because nobody knows Mackey or Grant are attracted to men. Way too young and ashamed to vow it loud and proud in their little town. They also have to worry about messing with the bond the guys have developed because it’s essentially messing with your best friends little brother. That will screw up a dynamic quickly. They guys can’t deny the attraction and steal their moments together where they can. Their first times are with each other despite Grant’s girlfriend’s pressure to do the deed. Yes, Grant has a girlfriend because everyone expects him to. You even like her which makes you think Grant must be a jerk, right? I didn’t while reading this book. Or the majority of it. Grant is resigned to the life his father has planned for him and thinks his time with Mackey is his small window of love and happiness. He really does believe that will be enough for both of them. That Mackey is destined for greatness despite his current station in life.Mackey is an amazing and talented self taught musician with a penchant for pissing people off. The guys form a band and with Mackey as the lead gain some respect and paying gigs. The relationship between Mackey and Grant goes on for years. Mackey deals with being Grant’s secret because he knows he loves him and honestly any time he gets to be with Grant is worth the pain. Then his life takes a huge turn. Mackey gets one thing he’s always wanted while losing the other. So, be prepared to fall in love in this book. Be prepared get crushed a little. It’s Amy Lane. You know it’s coming. And of course there’s more to come. Even knowing this I couldn’t wait to pick up the next installment. I just had to know how they all handled everything that went down in the last few pages of part 1. Just keep reading….. less
