review 1: Relatively simple (given the complexity of its subject matter) book aimed at providing some explanation as to the causes of the financial crisis and some straightforward policy solutions. Repeatedly drives the point of higher mandated equity levels for financial institutions (many of which are down in the low single digits today), at times to the detriment of the quality of writing, but nonetheless presenting a logical and persuasive case for that specific regulation. Admati and Hellwig's recipes for making banks more resilient, increasing their capital ratios from the ridiculously low levels where they are at currently seems a logical step, but I don't buy the notion that increasing the unweighted capital ratio to 25 percent would be without cost for either the banks or the economy. The new Basel rules on capital adequacy, including countercyclical buffers, SIFI surcharge and contingent capital are mentioned only briefly, and not thoroughly enough. less

Problematic but worth a read. 30% equity! The whole book is in the footnotes, which is weird.

Screed against bankers. Might be true but irritating tone will drive off many.
