review 1: A mixed bag here. It was interesting to learn about the Afghan culture and more about the time period after the Taliban, but it was difficult to connect with the main character. He didn't think and act like a ten year old boy. Other reviewers pointed out that perhaps this is because he's seen so much tragedy. That makes sense, but because it was difficult to relate to this old/young boy, I wasn't too drawn in by the book. Aside from that, the story was interesting.
review 2: I fell in love with this book. Well, perhaps not at first. The first chapter did not really speak to me, as the fun only started after the second where Fawid and his mother moves out. I found myself rereading a lot of the paragraphs, not because I didn't understand them, but because they
... more were so greatly written that their spark never left even when I read it a third time. Let me tell you, I read this book the entire night, and the amount of times I laughed surely surprised me. The writing really flowed well. The thing I love more about this book were the characters. Usually it's the characters that do it for me. A good story shouldn't have a lousy character and I ended up loving every character. Every character; be it Haji Khan, Fawid, Pir, Jamala, Georgie, James, hell there was even some love for Hugo even though he was just a juxtaposed character to express how far Khan's love went(which was brilliant by the way, and their love story, fantastic!) I love the story behind every character, and the hilarious confusion from Fawid while he thinks they're all going to hell. Love it, love it, love it!But nothing, and I mean nothing, made me yell more than I did in that last chapter. That last paragraph just made it for me. (But t'is true, that the title goes over my head. I don't think it gives this book justice.) less
