review 1: Not perfect but a great read. Enjoyed the basic recipes thrown in here and there. Continue to appreciate the expanded characterizations of Fazio et al. Especially enjoyed author's apolgia for mystery novels as well as his poltical swipes at Berlosconi and current Italian politics. I am sure this writer has his head screwed on straight! My empathies were with Salvo on this one--- old age is not for the faint-hearted. Liked the final scene: he swam and he wept. Salvo always seems to turn to the sea for healing, for sustenance, for pleasure. Certainly, the translator deserves kudos for his renderings and his much-appreciated notes.
review 2: I loved this book, as I do all the English translations, so beautifully done to retain the sense of humour and style, of And
... morerea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series. I like that occasionally phrases have been left in Italian or the Sicilian dialect and explained at the back of the book for those who are less familiar with Italian politics. Mani puliti (clean hands) which was a policy supposed to straighten out the parliament seems to have been every bit as ineffective as Pontius Pilate's efforts 2000 or so years ago...This story in particular amused me with a scene where Montalbano seems to completely lose his mind in a haystack - I refuse to spoil this scene further, but the sheer unexpected nature of it was what made it stand out! Livia drives me mad - or perhaps that is what Camilleri wants me to feel about her, but honestly. She is such a diva, and seems to deliberately misunderstand Montalbano. You do feel the danger of his personal unhappiness at getting older or losing his touch as they threaten to collide in the worst way with a very beautiful female throughout the book.A TV version of this book (minus the weird haystack scene, sadly!), was shown on BBC4. The actor who plays Montalbano is not as old as Montalbano seems to be in the books, but it is all the more believable for that. He does seem to capture the feel of the character in the books, even though you lose the explanation of the Italian backdrop that the writing provides. Do read this and the other books - I love the humour, and unless you are completely humourless, you will too! less

Andrea Camilleri and Montalbano a nice relaxing yet gripping detective story with no nasty surprises

Terrific, but the ending requires a more than usual effort at suspension of disbelief.
