Commissario Montalbano
review 1: The Inspector Montalbano series has a couple of recurring ingredients, and this book is no exception.1. Inspector Montalbano is cranky, intuitive and disrespectful of authority.2. The moment his long-time, and long-distance love Livia arrives in Vigata, they start to quarrel.3. He eats some lovely meals in unpretentious taverns4. He gets involved in a crime that ultimately leads to the Mafia or other forms of Organized Crime5. High-ranking officials are involved, and it appears that they will succeed in covering up their traces6. Thanks to some out-of-the-box thinking by Inspector Montalbano, the guilty parties won’t escape punishmentIn this particular book, it all starts with the nocturnal disappearance of Fazio, one of Montalbano’s colleagues. A tip leads to the di... morescovery of two bodies in an abandoned quarry. Fazio is found staggering around the mountain sides with serious wounds and is taken to a hospital, where a pretty nurse is remarkably helpful to Inspector Montalbano. A telescope, a transvestite and a ballet dancer are also involved. I find this series rather predictable as far as plot is concerned. The translator’s attempts to create an English equivalent of the Sicilian dialect by using a strange combination of phonetic spelling and homophones, are unsuccessful and even irritating. And yet, I read these books. Partially because the covers are so lovely, and partially because I can’t help but like the ornery, contrarian Montalbano.
review 2: I just love Camilleri's writing. His political view of the world resonates with me and his characters have values and issues I can share in a world tired of meaningless platitudes and the obvious self interest of those in power. The plot in this is good, better than in some of this series, but it's the protagonist's, and presumably Camilleri's own, view of life, and love of food and simple things like a hundred year old olive tree that make these books work for me. less

Good old Inspector Montalbano saves the day again and eats well while doing so.

A quick read. The usual blend of daft yet entertaining.
