review 1: Love it. These stories are not really like other detective stories: the crime and the solution aren't the main point, although Salvo does achieve a result (by unorthodox means) and sees off a number of threats (including a heart-stopping moment when it seems as if someone might burn down his lovely house). This one begins with a strange dream about a horse, and when he wakes he finds the carcass of a horse on the beach outside his house, but the carcass vanishes mysteriously and Salvo is drawn into a strange hidden world of aristocrats and clandestine horse racing (and a beautiful woman, who may be a threat to the absent Livia). Salvo is beginning to age and to worry about his eyesight and memory. 12th in the series, and there are several more to come. I also really enjoy ... morethe translator's notes which are tucked away at the end - unobtrusive and you can ignore them if you wish, but they are always entertaining and informative.
review 2: I did like this story but it took me a good bit of it to get into it. Salvo is still worried about aging and perhaps this is why he's been so promiscuous (or more like a naive young person just discovering the opposite sex?) in these last two books. This one involves illegal horse racing and I would've liked to have seen much more of that story line developed but as it turns out, the mystery of the disappearing dead horse and the discovery of a dead body are solved and connected. I still really find that the verbal sparring between Salvo and his men are what really makes these stories. less
