review 1: This is story about a family who has secrets. A lot of secrets. Told by Michael who is or isn't dead and how the family secrets developed. At first I didn't care for the book and almost sent it back to the library, but just when you want to give up it gets good with a tease of a family secret. Each member of the family and the village have parts of the story and of course at the end everything comes together. So don't give up on the story. Some of the descriptions in the book are written so well that you'd swear you can see it. I think that good descriptions make the story more believable. I do recommend this book and hope other enjoy it.
review 2: Boy was I relieved to get to the end of this. The writing itself was rather lovely with some beautiful des
... morecriptive passages but dear God the characters were awful. A family of self-obsessed, dysfunctional misfits who lied their way through life to avoid the what they perceived to be mundane reality. By the time I got to the end through this nonsense I'd stopped caring about how, why or if Michael had died. The white lies, red herrings , call them what you will, all became too complex and convoluted and frankly lacking in interest. A real shame because Gillies is obviously a talented writer. less
