review 1: Written in the voice of a woman born a slave in Barbados, living through the revolts and revolutions that freed the slaves, and telling the story of her life as an old woman. The author previously wrote Small Island, about immigrants to England from Barbados in the 1950s, and this made an interesting companion to that book. Historical fiction about something I don't know much about, so very much enjoyed it.
review 2: The problem (for me) with The Long Song is that I didn't care about any of the characters. Every person in it was totally unlikable. There's a whole list of adjectives you could apply to the people in this book--cruel, lazy, ignorant, mean, selfish, stupid...Even the main character lacked any redeeming personality traits. She seemed to wander aro
... moreund in a fog--not really connecting to anything. I know this author has won writing awards--I guess I'm just not into the type of story she writes. less

This is a very good book. It gives a very real picture of what slavery was like in Jamaica.

Interesting for a while but slowly lost the will to live near the end.
