review 1: This is one of my all-time favorite books in the sci-fi genre. The author shows exquisite talent in building up his characters, by following them during their formative years and working life. The sci-fi premise is thus woven deeply and believably into their lives, something that almost all other sci-fi books fail to do.As for the substance of the book (self-replicating machines), their impact and potential are portrayed realistically. At no point did I lose my suspension of disbelief in Hiroshi's actions and motives. And though Charlotte's unexplained talent seemed at first annoying and contrived, by the end of the book I'm glad it was included. In all, this book was so good I couldn't put it down after the first few hundred pages and finished reading it at 4am:) Thou... moregh it's been over a year since I've read it, the story has stayed with me, hence the FIVE STARS. Read it!
review 2: First of all, I do not only love the cover but also the texture of the pages and the size of the font which made it an especially comfortable reading experience.I loved the insight on different cultures which did not only describe how it is to live in these countries, but also the mentality and behavior of the people there which I can not confirm as I haven't been to any of the mentioned places yet, but it seemed like a realistic portrayal. As Hiroshi finally revealed his big idea/dream there were immediately a thousand thoughts appearing in my head thinking about the advantages and disadvantages and if it would actually work etc. They only increased as the story continued. One negative point in my opinion was the (really long) part when they were in college. It was probably to enhance the relationship between Hiroshi and Charlotte as well as the connection between the characters and the reader, but it made the progress of the story extremely slow and most of it was only about sex, parties and relationships. With about 700 pages it is a rather long book but it feels like there is even more content than you'd think. Maybe because we are accompanying the characters for a huge part of their lives or because there are a couple of different narrative perspectives. Talking about that, it's astonishing how Andreas Eschbach can create so many surprisingly realistic situations and describe them perfectly with the eyes of the respective character. All in all I really enjoyed this book a lot and it inspires me to think more about the topic of wealth and possessions even after finishing it. less
