review 1: Sometimes a good message is not enough to support a piece of work. This is a graphic novel, after all, and the art is lackluster and pedestrian. I know that the messy style is supposed to reflect the action and overall psychology, but I think they could have gotten a much more talented artist. Also, I was left confused by the writing style. It seemed like way too much was left unsaid. The unflowery, somewhat stilted prose didn't help matters.
review 2: I found this in my public library on the Young Adult shelf. It's nice to see a decent graphic novel devoted to the topic of abuse and bullying, though honestly it does not really address those topics in much depth. The artwork looks, on the surface, a bit rough and "incomplete" yet it's obvious that this is the w
... moreay the style is meant to be that way, and it works. It successfully communicates and delivers a strong emotional message, standing next to the writing in a real partnership of storytelling. Watching the boy's facial features develop was one of my favorite parts on the first reading. The writing and story itself was decent enough, though as mentioned before doesn't really offer much serious exploration of abuse and bullying--it just "happens" in the story. However, the art helps quite a bit, and what is present, for anyone who has experienced bullying, cuts quickly and deeply. Considering the length of the book, which is rather short, the method the authors used to cover the amount of time and personal growth in the main character seems well-chosen and is executed skillfully. The book ends with a lengthy essay about narcissism and personality disorders. It's about ten times the reading level of the main book, but if anything it can be a helpful jumping off point for people who recognize those issues in loved ones around them and want to explore the subject further. less

Nice message about bullies, and nice story about a kid who ends up with a movie good ending!

A decent read, a little heavy-handed but not bad if you skip the foreword and afterword.

A spectacular and moving graphic novel. Sure to be seen on the awards lists this year.
