review 1: I don't know if I liked this book's content, nor am sure how I feel after I was done with the book. For one, mystery/thriller isn't my first choice of reading material so I do not have much expectation with this book. When I started the book I liked the directness of the main character but what kept me reading was the promised expose'a to come. But what really made me stuck with the story was that by the middle of the book, I was in that place where I can't not finish it. Knowing it will end badly, I still want to know 'how', the 'who' and the mostly the 'why' of things.I guess I need to re read again this book - slowly - for me to fully grasp the whole nuance in every twist. Right now I am still asking myself what in the world happened.Overall, this book twisted my head, m... morey mind, and my thinking. (see?) But boy was it a fascinating read.(Thanks to my local library)
review 2: There was a tangled narrative thread to this and for a long time I wasn't sure we were ever going to have a story. I didn't like the way the whole book was arranged into little chapterlets running anyplace from a paragraph to a page and a half. It was all fits and starts and I almost didn't have the patience to get to enough information to make it interesting. I also -- and I guess this is just personal taste -- found it very annoying that the narrator called his brother "Tory-boy" for the whole 213 pages. But eventually these irritations were overcome and the narrator and his life of crime and courtesy were interesting enough to get me to the end of the book. Finally, though, I recalled after all was said and done that the narrator had rattled on for pages and pages at the beginning about how he was writing this book as "a bomb" for after he was dead. Apparently quite a ways before the book ended the author forgot all about that claim. less
