review 1: BEAUTIFUL! The description of the apes and their personalities is fantastic. You understand the Apes, their life stories and how they are slowly recovering.Not only do you understand their plights from an outsiders perspective, but also from the apes themselves. At times I felt that the Apes were talking to the author and saying how they felt, but really it was all from their demeanor's and actions. The observation the author did and the way he captured them and put them on paper blew my mind. It's an exclusive view into the everyday lives of these people and the Apes that we as outsiders would never get. Beautiful!
review 2: Excellent account of the months spent by the author volunteering at a sanctuary for retired biomedical research chimps in rural Quebec. I... moret was extremely difficult to read about just how rotten human beings have been to chimpanzees. It was also intellectually and emotionally challenging to read about the chimps' retirement lives and the implications of the bonds that they forge and the connections that they make both with each other and with their human caregivers. Very worthwhile. less
