Nina Wilde & Eddie Chase
review 1: Okay, their back. Eddie and Nina’s relationship is back on track. And I love it. There’s a little sniping, but that’s normal in a relationship. Not having so many of Eddie’s female ‘friends’ around helps also. This adventure is as exciting as the first ones were. Now that we’ve gotten rid of the ex-wife and the horrible boss. But the theme of a millionaire declaring himself a god and trying to take over the world is getting old! There’s got to be other situations that give our team problems. I love treasure hunts (especially ones that involve Egypt) that have to work their way through levels of tests or traps to get to the prize and this one’s really good. Seven steps, each designed after the attribute of a female demi-goddess. Having two o... moref them combined, just makes it more exciting. I think my favorite is the burning oil. It’s the most ingenious. Nina has gained a lot of experience since the first book. She’s a lot more inventive and capable. Which is a positive qualification for her future occupation. Eddie is settling down also. I love Macy. She’s spunky, intelligent and works well with Eddie and Nina. I think she matured in this book from being an overindulged young person. I hope she‘s seen again. For a celebrity, Grant is an okay guy, but Berkley is a jerk. But at least he’s not evil. I hope he’s learned his lesson. Quick Thoughts: 1)Why is it always billionaires? Don’t’ they have enough to do than destroy the world and rebuild it with them it charge? 2)Not as many awful movie jokes, but there are some good ones, and bad ones. 3)I think part of the reason these stories seem too is that they are all major, legendary discoveries, which is not very likely for one person to discover. It’d be better if some were historical, but secondary finds. Like Clive Cussler’s are. 4)Destruction tally: a Porsche, 2 police cars, a NYC cab, a hot dog cart, Dodge Ram truck, a Grand Prix racecar, a large yacht, three jet skis and several smaller yachts, 2 LSVs, a military hovercraft, 2 4x4s and a Eurocopter. They make a lot of business for the transportation industry. Fave scenes: Eddie’s Lamborghini chase rescue of Nina’s car chase, Eddie and Nina’s ‘let it all out’ fight, dancing in Monte Carlo and Osiris water chute ‘ride’.
review 2: Fun fact: In college, before I settled on my major’s concentration, ancient Greek culture, I was leaning towards Egyptology, and specifically the religious emphasis in ancient Egyptian society. But really, that’s just a smarty pants way o saying I was over the moon for the religious stories and myths. So anything Egyptian in general, even though I did go the way of Greek culture, is an A+ for me. However, this book wasn’t.I always, and I mean always, read these books for the plot. That’s the point of an adventure book. But this time around the plot seemed … a little lackluster, I guess you could say. The plots of McDermott’s books are usually layered and a little more complex. This time it was pretty straight forward, and I’m not sure I liked that. There wasn’t really an air of mystery to anything. And it all seemed rather predictable. I don’t like action adventure books that are predictable. The characters also seemed really flat, too, which usually isn’t a problem. Macy was … incredibly boring and annoying. If she’s the supporting character, she needs to be fresh and exciting. She’s the character that that main characters are supposed to bounce off of. But she was just there to get on my nerves, apparently. But probably the biggest issue I had with her, aside from how annoying she was, was how she had practically no character growth in the entire book. Almost none. I can’t like a character that I a can’t get to know. Or maybe I’m just comparing her to the other supporting characters from previous books that were much more interesting and exciting. The badguys were disappointingly generic. And while the end of the book was easily the most exciting part, nothing really felt up to part. The book felt like it was just going through the motions, chugging along at a steady pace. This is not what I expect from this series, and I feel kind of let down. Even more since my love from Egypt is immense.I can only cross my fingers and hope the next is better. I certainly don’t want to see this series get worse. less
