review 1: No matter what the little boy does, he cannot interest his dog, Santiago in joining him. At his wit's end, he finally yells - and wakes up the baby. Santiago and the little boy soothe the baby, and find something they can do together. Was Santiago looking after the baby the whole time? Would he not play because he was busy? Cute illustrations - Santiago is a French bulldog. Story is just so-so.
review 2: It's a standoff between a puppy and his boy. Truly this book speaks to how it is not always easy to train a puppy, and this one is especially determined to do what it wants. Not even the temptation of its favourite turkey treat, can convince him. A denial which is surprising to the reader who fully expects he will accept after seeing his wide-eyed "want" ... morelook (all dogs give this). Distance is both implied and visually represented between the two, often showing one in the foreground while the other is in the background, and not even appearing together on the same page. Only at the end do both stand side by side, and it is thanks to the actions of another. Even with such a sweet ending, things are largely unresolved between them, and are never addressed.One note should be made in regards to dogs, the boys shout of frustration may make for a good climax, but yelling at a dog in real life produces nothing but bad results; training should remain positive.Warm tones, and a softly rounded style, help to hint at the approaching positive outcome. Toys, and treats are all things dogs like, but it is companionship that they really love. True bonds are not created through superficial means, but through shared emotions. less
