review 1: I like the teaching conceps of colors, counting, and even food in this. I'm not the biggest fan of the illustrations of the rabbits. And I'm not the biggest fan of the text at the very beginning. But this gives me a great idea for my Bunny toddler storytime--and I've been needing something!4/12/12 This worked so well! I scanned pictures of all the food. Cut them out and taped them on the white board (except the pepper) so it looked like a garden. I just happened to have made 11 bunny finger puppets (5 for my "5 Little Bunnies" song). So I had 10 bunnies all ready! I brought in a bowl, spoon, and Miss Muffy--my white rabbit puppet I've had since I was 6 or 7. I didn't read from the book, but I summed up the basic story (excluding Papa bunny). Each little bunny "found" its i... moretems in the garden. I had the kids tell me colors and help me count. Then we "chopped" them with our hands and added them to the bowl. Mama bunny (Miss Muffy) took the bowl and the kids chanted aloud with me as she stirred: "Yum! Yum! Yum!" Then we all sniffed the soup and said "Ah!!" (Miss Muffy made this look adorable.) When #10 came along, there was nothing left in the garden, but little bunny found the pepper on the table. We put it in and stirred. After sniffing, I had Mama bunny sneeze. Then all the bunnies jumped into the bowl to eat the soup. The kids loved it. And way to really use those little bunnies! It made it even better that I'd prepared that as a craft afterwards.4/9/14 Used this in my Colors preschool theme. I laminated the food so it would be easier to pull of the board. I had a small group (usually do), so I had them take turns coming up and being the bunnies--letting them find the different foods and putting them in the pot. Found a bunny puppet in the childrens closet, so I used her to stir the food. They enjoyed and loved being more involved.
review 2: Spring is truly coming and we have been having fun with a delightful new book by Anita Lobel: 10 Hungry Rabbits. This counting and color book offers a chance for young children to practice counting and color names with a sweet, comforting story.Mama Rabbit has nothing to feed her ten hungry babies, so Papa sends them out to the garden. "You are sure to find good things for Mama's soup pot there," he tells them. Sure enough, the little rabbits find all sorts of treasures in the garden: * one big purple cabbage * two white onions * three yellow peppersEach page show a large, soft illustration of the vegetables, and then smaller detailed scenes of the rabbits in the garden. Children will notice many layers of details - from the rabbit's clothes matching the color of the item they find, to the textures of the foods. The pink potatoes are full of dimples and eyes, and the orange carrots look like they've just been pulled out of the ground. This simple counting book may seem brief at first glance, but the repetition and rhythm of the story are so important for young children to experience. As K.T. Horning writes in her Horn Book review, "This concept book has an original story line, engaging characters, rich language, and a predictable visual and narrative pattern, and the concepts themselves are reinforced in multiple ways in words and pictures, some subtle and some obvious. Best of all, it's the sort of picture book you can read aloud just for the fun it, even if you don't care about teaching numbers or colors." less
