review 1: Tell it to the Trees was an exercise in reading between the lines, as well as trying to understand life from the perspective of someone whose views of right and wrong may have been skewed in childhood. On some levels the reader can't understand how this character would think that a certain behaviour is acceptable, but when you consider how they were raised then it doesn't seem quite so incomprehensible. Or when you consider that this person may truly have felt that they have no options or alternatives. What makes this book really interesting is that this applies to several of the characters in different ways and to varying degrees!
review 2: What an great read (though not great literature)! It 's lovely to immerse one's self in a book that's hard to put down. T
... morehis book is about keeping secrets and about violence and the way it affects family members through several generations. It focuses on an East Indian family living in a small town somewhere in rural B.C. Vikram is a controlling, abusive man. His gentle wife -Suman, daughter - Varsha, and son- Hemant live in constant fear of one of Vikram's violent outbursts. His mother, Akka, lives with the family. The course of this family's life changes when a tenant, Anu, comes to live nearby and, through her probing, the family secrets slowly start to come into the open ...with devastating consequences. The characters are strong and multi-dimensional (except perhaps for that of Vikram who is stereotypical) with convincing explanations for their personalities. Varsha, especially, is a strong (though creepy) character; a thirteen year old determined to hold the family together at all costs. The story is told through the voices of several of the characters. The plot is well constructed and fast paced, and I loved the ending! This is an easy, fast read and certainly one I would recommend. less
