review 1: Serafina lives in extreme poverty in Port au Prince, Haiti. This novel told in verse presents her efforts to earn enough money to go to school so she can become a doctor like the woman who tried to save her baby brother from starvation. The contrast between Serafina's life and that of a typical (or even impoverished) American child is stark and will be easily noticed. American readers are likely to be surprised by how many difficulties Serafina is up against, and how cheerfully she works to change things. Schools with large Haitian populations are likely to find this book an especially good addition to their collection. A description of the recent Haitian earthquake was particularly compelling. Recommended for students in grades 3 or 4 and up.
review 2: A
... more verse novel about a young girl in Haiti dealing with poverty, a flood and an earthquake. With lyrical storytelling, this moving first person narrative about Serafina's dream of becoming a doctor and the myriad obstacles in her path will captivate and inspire readers. Serafina never loses hope in the face of all these catastrophes; her love for her family, community, and God keep her together and allow her to continue pursing her dreams. But this is also the story of Haiti which is a more complicated story that will break the reader's heart and leave them wanting more. less
