review 1: GENRE: Inspirational fictionSETTING: Small town America; Rosey Corner, Kentucky; Depression eraCENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTER: KATE MERRITT is the middle daughter of 3 girls. Everything falls on her shoulders. Reliable without fault and she does not mind taking responsibility. Mature for her age of 14 years. CENTRAL MALE CHARACTERS: No central male character(s) as this inspirational story is centered around KATE. SYNOPSIS: Tori is the youngest of three, Evie is the oldest and lives in the clouds. Nadine still loves her husband Victor who fights his demons with drink. Fern is off her rocker. Aunt Hattie is wise. Preacher Reece is angry with his daughter for marrying Victor. And, Lorena Birdsong says her name every morning and every night so people will know who she is.Hu... moremor to be found. Get the tissue box in some cases.WHAT I LIKED: Mention of scriptures. "Live today. Pray today. Let the Lord take care to tomorrow...." What an inspiration not only in small town America.WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Victor's wimpish personality ad nauseam. He is "afraid", "afraid" and (you got it), "afraid".I give this book (FIVE) stars because written in narration format (interesting) and "all" colorful characters each with memorable names, personalities and lives.
review 2: The multiple points-of-view and frequent flashbacks in the beginning made it hard for me to get into this story, but when I did, I really enjoyed it. Little Lorena Birdsong, abandoned by her parents who couldn't feed her during the Great Depression, says her name out loud every morning and every evening so she won't forget who she is. But some of the other characters have forgotten who they are and believed what others say about them. The author wrestles with a difficult question: What does honor your father and your mother mean when you parents have squashed you and told you you are worthless because you don't live up to their expectations, or when they interfere with your marriage? Is it possible to honor and still stand up for yourself? When does standing up for yourself become disrespect? Gabhart doesn't offer easy solutions, but she left me with a lot to think about as a parent. less

I thought this was a really good book, a compelling way to describe the importance of forgiveness.
