review 1: This is a book told from the viewpoints of five different women who lived in North Carolina Appalachia from the 1920's through the 1960's. What a debut by an author. The voices of the women are compelling and stunning....I read it through in two sittings. It starts and ends with Nellie - who comes to Black Mountain as a young bride and learns the hard way about a woman's place, the voices of the departed, and a man's rights. She is warned to get off the mountain while she could, and even her mama saw death in the tea leaves. The story has ghosts, "haints," and hoodoo/voodoo, and pulls the reader into the lives of the mountain people and the town people with surprising strength. You'll think about Nellie and Hobbs, her husband, and their families long after you turn the ... morelast page. The options that women had back then and in that part of the country were few, and the women's stories here have an authentic feel.... other worldly and moving. I loved it!
review 2: This was one of those books that I enjoyed reading g but when finished, I wasn't really sure how I felt about it. haha! It kept me interested and I loved the characters and how the story was written. You read from the perspective of 5 very different women which gives you all these different angles to consider. Towards the last quarter of the book, some events happen that definitely surprise you and yet were a little weird. I loved the ghost story but don't know that I'd read again . less
