review 1: Lyrical, poetic, absorbing, compelling. Ann Hite's "Ghost" is one of the most satisfying reads I've encountered in many years. Her voice is definitely Southern, an intriguing combination of Celestine Sibley and Margaret Mitchell, with her own simple and understated story-telling style that sneaks up on you. Just as her ghosts unassumingly enter the story without fanfare, so Hite's writing style pulls you in. Before you know it, not only do you no longer fear ghosts, you welcome them. This is a major work of great literature, by a new voice that breathes subtle energy into the American fiction landscape. I recommend it to anyone who appreciates a novel that works as a great story and a work of art.
review 2: I actually did not finish reading Ghost on Black Mou
... morentain. At first, the book seemed to flow well, but once Nellie was up on the mountain, it seemed a little repetitive and slow. I was only able to get through about a little more than a third of the book. Because of the dislike and fear of her husband, it seemed she was not totally welcomed by the local people on the island. It very well could be that I just didn't get past a slower part of the book before finally putting it down. less
