review 1: Let me state upfront - I like short stories. I appreciate their economy. And sometimes I don't want to be toting something too involved along on the subway or while I'm waiting for an appointment, so this becomes my medium of choice. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. The twists reminded me of the feeling of horror I felt the first time I watched Bergman's Persona. I also liked how the stories (and novella) featured characters in different stages of life. Glad I picked this book up from its free box home.
review 2: My favorite stories were the one about the woman who is pregnant and the one where the father of the blended families disappears. Packer has a tendency in her short stories to weave a tale and then BAM deliver the punch line in the last paragraph.
... more I'm not sure I liked this - it works in some stories better than others. I think I like her full length novels better, but this was enjoyable too. I did not enjoy the first story, which was disappointing because it took up about half the book! More like a novella. I think I didn't get the punch line. less

This is the second Ann Packer book that I have read. Her books are depressing.
