review 1: Ok Im not sure where to start with this book. I read the book with enthusiasm and for me it just kinda sit there. Not much happening in the book. The author did a fantastic job with civil war fact. She definitly did her homework for this book. This book would be perfect for 12-15 year olds. I read alot of young adult. But like i said this book just kinda sit there. I read it waiting for the action and it was just not there. The brother David kept me intrigued. He was protective and sometimes rude. But i liked him. I understood (as an adult) where he was coming from. I would have done the same. I never once doubted his love for his sister. I think the book all and all was good. But its not on my read again list. Not sure if ths is a book in a series but it is definitly a ... morestand alone book. My score 3/5
review 2: Release date is November 2010. The story of the siege on Gettsburg told through new eyes. The tension of the town can be felt as news of the Rebels approach reaches the townspeople. A town that has many negro families living and working in it as free people. The first of the rebels rounded up those that they found and put them on transports to be sent to the South as slaves. Tacy's best friend Marvelous and her mother Mary were two that were rounded up but managed to escape to the Stryker home where a decision was made to hide them in the belfry of the church. Two of Tacy's brothers were off with the Union Army and her father was away treating wounded soliers who needed his medical help. Tacy's brother David, a bit lame, was left at home to care for the family. Sam Wade, brother of Jennie, works for the Stryker family as well as another girl from the town. It is through their eyes and relationships that the reader learns just how devastating the battle was to the residents of Gettsyburg and just how high a cost they paid. The author also brings to light that not all of the Confederate soliders felt slavery was right. less
