review 1: 1. Genre: Counting Literature2. Summary: This book introduces counting 1-10 through the use of simple rhymes and colorful illustrations. Large numbers that appear as a quilt are presented along with a corresponding number of buttons to create a visual idea of how many the number actually represents.3. Critique: (a) Comment: The author accurately depicts counting from one to ten and used rhyme simply and appropriately to present the material. The illustrations are colorful and playful in appearance which is a visually appealing way to present the material to young readers. The illustrations are most definitely the best aspect of this counting book. The use of a quilt like scheme and corresponding counting tools through buttons is effective in presenting the subject.... more (b) The colorful illustrations are the strongest aspect of this book and will be highly effective in keeping the interest of the reader. The placement of buttons next to each number which correspond and provide a visual tool where you could place your finger and count along with young learners is also a wonderfully effective presentation in this book. The one negative aspect of this book is that there is very minimal use of text, which I felt created a very choppy feel to it. I feel that the book would not be effective of a read aloud because there are not enough words. If given to a young reader to use as an independent learning tool could prove to be effective however.(c) Page 1 and 2 of the book, like others that follow, only depict the number and a corresponding number of buttons. The illustration is colorful and appealing, but provides little meaning. The pages where rhyming occur are separated from the pages where numbers are presented, which does help avoid any confusion. Concrete visuals provide clarify for counting, but would not be valuable in a group or read aloud setting.4. This book would be a good addition to a preschool or kindergarten curriculum that is teaching counting to young learners. It could be used as a supplemental tool to individual students when learning to count and to those students who need more concrete relationships presented to them in order to create connections.Citation: Grossnickle-Hines, Anna, Harcourt Inc., New York, NY
review 2: The quilting is beautiful--you wish that you could reach out and touch it.The whole book is beautifully designed, with the button filled pictures on the inner covers and flyleaves.Kids will not admire this as crafting, but the quilt pictures as quilt pictures have tremendous child appeal.Best of all, it's a beautiful piece of art AND a Mother Goose rhyme that every child should learn combined--you can't get much better than that! less
