review 1: "Peaceful Pieces: Poems and Quilts About Peace" is a wonderful book full of poems describing many different situations where peace can be found. There are poems about animals, young children, famous activists, etc. The thing that this book really explains is that peace can be found in many unexpected places and in many situations. The pictures in this book are really unique too. There are quilts on some pages and collages on other pages. This goes along with the title because many pictures are pieced together. Teachers can bring in quilts if possible to show children what they are in person. They can use this book for a text-set on peace and maybe focus in on a few poems and relate that to other stories or historical events. Students can look into a few poems and explain t... moreo a partner in their own words what that poem is about. In the back of the book is a great tool to use for interdisciplinary ideas for this book. There are pages that include different names and pictures of peacemakers and a paragraph about them. It also describes the process of creating the quilts. Students can read this and learn about the process for making the book. They can also pick a peacemaker to find more books and information about and relate poems to them. The grade level that I believe would be appropriate for this book would probably be second and third grade.
review 2: This creative author and illustrator combines her love of poetry and her love of quilting in this book focusing on "peace". Each page contains a portion of a quilt she's made along with a poem centered around peace. The author also includes a section in the back titled "Peacemakers" with photos, quotes, and a short background of 8 of the most influential peacemakers in our world's history. The list includes people such as: Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. Not only will kids love this book, but they will be inspired by it. Creating a peaceful and caring environment is something that often gets overlooked in our world filled with competition. This is a refreshing outlook and a great book! less
