review 1: A pretty interesting treatment of the immigrant experience: a teenage Ukrainian Jewish mail-order bride arrives in South Dakota to live in a dugout with her devout (if not devoted) groom and his two teenaged sons. I really appreciated this very different treatment of the midwestern immigrant experience and have to admit I had never considered what it would be like to be a Jewish pioneer in the Dakotas before reading this book.Also, I have to give the author some props for making the word "Iowa" a tool of seduction. I think the title and the cover art unfairly pigeonhole this rather serious book as being romance or chicklit. I discovered it thanks to a library recommendation.Overall, I felt this was a rather European-style treatment of the pioneer experience; most pioneer s... moretories emphasize how manifest destiny gets carried out while the butter churns, but Anna Solomon emphasizes how personal experience, faith, and personal capacity provide a much more challenging landscape than even the harshest blizzard or rockiest ground ever could.
review 2: I wanted to love this book. I heard the author speak and was excited about the book. I found Minna's voice to be inauthentic...i thought the ending to be rushed...one of the points in the book that I found fascinating was that of mail-order bride. I related it to the modern Internet romances...I am not truly sure what the intent of the book was: unrequited love, old traditions vs new cultures, an unconventional woman set in conventional times, the hardship of the region? ..overall...the only reason I would recommend this book would be to see other readers' perceptions of the book. less
