review 1: This is incredible! In part, Carson is changing Antigone from a play, to be performed, to a book, to be read. (That seems appropriate. After all, when was the last time you saw a performance of any of Sophocles' plays? For most of us, it's been a very long time!) She uses white space on pages for effects, and translucent pages with color pictures, so that this couldn't be performed as a play. Also, her language at times treats the text irreverently (and always very loosely). But she gets her interpretation of Antigone across. It works. I am awestruck.

This book is beautiful and sad and funny and a really lovely adaptation of the Greek tragedy.

Lovely and strange. Convinced me to read a whole slew of Greek stories and plays besides.
