review 1: This is my favourite translation of an Oresteia I've read so far. I like her use of Euripides' Orestes as it seems much more of a finale than The Eumenides, and I really enjoy the way she weaves poetry and modern language together, building to a quite modern, soap opera-style ending, capped off with Apollo rocking up for a deus ex machina that really underlines how he's using this family as his playthings. Would definitely recommend this as an introduction to the Oresteia as a story, and the introductions to each play are definitely worth a read.
review 2: awesome. the first two plays are excellent, and then the euripedes just gets bonkers, which is kind of amazing to watch. now if carson could just spend the next 25 years or so translating the greeks, i could ... moreget myself to read them all. and be very happy about it. (yes, i realize that perhaps it is not the most strictly word-for-word correct translation of these plays, but you know what? now i've read them and enjoyed them and understand what the hell just happened. the story was conveyed expertly. for my money (esp. because it's not poetry) that's what i want--to be excited about it.) less
