review 1: Wonderful book. Very amusing, fast paced, light read. Perfect for by the pool. The scene where Harry feeds her is priceless and very funny. Loved when the women got physical with the fighting, it was so funny the slap trading. I found the end of their quest to find what Nell's (Lady Helen's) father had taken away from her (at the church where the initial search ended) to be sad but thankfully realistic. Even just getting answers to enable you to move on in real life might have been unlikely, it was good for her sake that it seemed resolved. The 'finale' with the accidental death was way too convenient for everyone involved, just when you thought these 'easy outs' were being avoided. But I did absolutely love the eventual ending, with the surprise rescue, all was redeemed. ... moreThe hero's interactions after were so endearing. Pillowcases and towels and "it needs to eat?" questions and all. Harry was very caring throughout the book. Overall a very enjoyable read. Great characters, well paced, good dialogue, touching romance and spectacularly original opening scene. Excerpts-“Oh,” Nell stood in the passage in her nightgown, but with a shawl clasped around her at least. Her feet were still bare, he noted irritably. Her toes would be frozen. He’d spent a long time warming those toes last night. Like little blocks of ice, they’d been. He felt somewhat proprietal about those toes.”-------“Who did your hair?” Lady Gosforth asked. “It’s very good.”“Cooper,” Nell told her. “In fact I wondered if you would let her come to London with me. Of course, if you need her here—”“She’ll come,” Harry said. His aunt looked at him with raised eyebrows. He frowned. “What?” He glanced from his aunt to Nell and back again. “Nell wants her to come,” he told his aunt, as if that were a clincher.Lady Gosforth’s brows rose higher. “My nephew has spoken.”
review 2: I like to read a nice, cheesy romance every once in a while. I used to be embarrassed about it, but not anymore. I read for pleasure, not to impress anyone. I have a weakness for story, and if a story pulls me in, it's worth reading, no matter the genre. I must admit I've read some pretty trashy romances, and by trashy I mean poorly written, utterly transparent plotline, ridiculous dialogue, etc. This one, in spite of the stupid name, is very well-written and actually contains subtlety and nuance. It's a relief to read a romance that doesn't have me cringing on every other page. I have removed one star for one cringeworthy paragraph. Aside from that, I'm rating it very high mostly because compared to others of its ilk, it's a shining jewel. It was enjoyable and fun. I'll check out more by this author. less
