review 1: At the beginning I thought the story a bit predictable s I wasn't that much excited about it, but I liked being slapped in the face with a great book. XDIn this book I loved Maddy more than Nash, here Nash messed plenty of opportunities with the wrong words. And Maddy had really proved herself as someone who wont take charity from anyone if it was solely for her, all her decision were based on the kids. The scenes I loved in this book were the one's Nash had with the children, specially Lucy, because it was heartwarming at all the time I was "aah and ooh". I loved the parts were Maddy showed everyone what she though, first Nash, then Marcus, then Aunt Maude. And did I mention before how much I loved Aunt Maude, every time she appearance she bring a lightheartedness to the s... morecene, like at the church, when she kept complimenting Maddy and backing her up, and specially at the wedding party when she told Nash "you can thank me later" that whole conversation was hilarious. Now since I finished this book, I finished the Devil Riders series, cause I read the fifth book before the other. And can I say again and again overall I just love it and *thumps up*
review 2: Ah, I was due for a four or five star! ((I was also due for a historical romance.)) This was BOTH. Wonderful for me!This is the story about Maddie. Her grandmother was a countess who attended Marie Antoinette before 'the terror', who fled and lived in a tiny cottage as a beekeeper after that. Her mother had married an English Lord, but he'd gone home and left mother and baby Maddie in France when no male heirs were begat. Maddie was raised poor as a church-mouse, but with the manners and bearing of her noble birth. Mother painted and taught Maddie to garden, while grandmere taught her to be a lady and also to keep bees. Her father remarried and had five children before burying his wife, and when a nursemaid was needed for them and Maddie's mother and grand-mere passed on, he brought Maddie back to England to tend his children, and then him (after a riding accident). He died in debt, offering Maddie up to his debt-owner as payment. Terrified, Maddie took the five children and ran. They lived in hiding in a cottage in a tiny, obscure village - rent paid in honey and with whatever she could earn making over ladies' hats after the children were abed. This is all back-story. The story begins when Nash Renfrew, second son of an earl rides out to the village to inspect his inheritance. His uncle had died, leaving him an estate. In a storm, his horse was washed from beneath him and he hit his head in the fall... right outside of Maddie's cottage. Maddie, of course, hauls the man inside and tends to his wounds. When Nash awakens, he has no recollection of who he is, where he's going, or where he hails from. For several days, he simply is absorbed into this little family, up close and personal with Maddie. And of course they fall in love. But Nash is a British diplomat to Russia. His future wife had to have breeding, foreign connections, be able to handle life abroad. And what would a penniless English commoner do, if he were to marry her, as he *really* wants to. Little does Nash know what Maddie is truly capable of...It was a WONDERFUL read - thoroughly enjoyable. There's a bad guy, trying to sabotage her livelihood, there's Nash's family, that thinks she's after his money, there's the village, scandalized to find out a MAN has been staying at Maddie's cottage... it was fun. Very well written, well researched (LOVE books with historical notes at the end)...Excepting for two things. I couldn't give it five stars, because EVERY. SINGLE. ENGLISH. HEROINE is named Maddie, anymore. It's kind of driving me crazy. I think this is the third one in a row. I don't care if the names then were ridiculous or not - we need a Hortentia or a Prudence or a Eugenia. PLEASE... No more Madelines!!! And the other thing is an error that rankled me. On page 29 we're told (after 12 hours with Nash in home) that he's been there two days. Another day/night later, on page 48, we're told he awakens, and Maddie says he's been there two days. It was... not right. But that's me, nitpicking, isn't it? It's still four stars - definitely worth reading!! less

Good author but struggled to stay interested, so probably won't read more of hers for awhile.

One of the best romances I've read this year. Anne's characterisation skills are fantastic.
