review 1: This book starts out well enough. Attractive cover. Intriguing title (reminiscent of Agatha Christie's The Unexpected Guest). The back cover compares the writer to Virginia Woolf. I disagree. A Mrs. Dalloway this story is not. The writing, particularly descriptions of Paris, does show promise, but halfway through, the book drags, and the main character seems to be repeating her angst-driven thoughts (as though readers couldn't possibly be relied on to remember anything!). The plot at times just doesn't seem credible, and the relationship between Clare and her husband of over two decades seems superficial. What little action there is slows to an anticlimactic ending. A big disappointment.
review 2: Enjoyable story, but I was left wanting more. The story lines we
... morere sort of weakly linked and I didn't really care that much about Clare in the end. I found her to be sort of annoying and unworthy of sympathy. And: (spoiler alert) what she realizes about her trip to Dublin not being what she thought it had been was a pretty lame explanation. Overall I enjoyed this as a quick and entertaining read--good for the beach or an airplane. less

perhaps a dithering, dyslexic wife of a diplomat was not the best narrator for me. disappointing.
