review 1: After not especially liking the second book, I went back and read this one, the first book. I did like the first book better than the second, but, again, after such a beautiful and heartbreakingly promising beginning, this story loses its way by the end. The author described this book as being "amphibian" like a salamander, but it feels more like it is not one thing or the other instead of living comfortably in two worlds.
review 2: I liked this fantasy/magic story about a relatively secret society finding a way to achieve immortality, uncovered and ultimately quashed by a young girl connected to the founding family. But not enough to give it 5 stars. It was pretty confusing at times, especially in regards to familial connections, who was who. That was part
... moreof the plot, but I don't think it was done well enough to ease my discomfort and not really knowing who was related to whom and how. At one point Nesbet tries to explain recessive genes in a few sentences, to a juvenile audience no less. I didn't even get her conclusion on that, so how would a kid do?Maya is a very insecure girl, and as insecure girl characters go, she does triumph. But for 90% of the book, I didn't really like her, despite my understanding her. Mainly because she doesn't really do anything. I didn't like that the entire action of the story takes place in the last 30 pages. I really liked Valko and kind of wanted the book to feature him rather Maya. Maya's parents are fairly nonchalant about her presence throughout the story, and therein lies one of Maya's issues, given that her brother is like a flame to a moth. The concept of one's "earth" being one's essence/soul/whatever was interesting, but I kept getting hung up on the choice of earth as the term. Just seemed weird to me.Maybe kids won't see it that way. less

Admittedly I was drawn to this largely because one of the kids' names is Valko.

Kind of slow, but interesting. Ready to read the next, A Box of Gargoyles.

Not at all what I expected! A fast, good read!
