review 1: This series has been heralded as the "next Harry Potter", which is always a bit unnerving. Originally written in French and recently translated into English. As far as the story goes, it's ok. It's not awesome and it certainly doesn't suck you in to the point you can't wait for the next book to come out. The only similarity between Harry Potter and this is that they both discovered they can do magic and have a few magical creatures and plants. There are loads of characters and creatures all with odd names, these may have been perfectly good names in the original French, but I feel that a lot has been lost in translation. The dialogue felt stilted and at times non-sensical. It got very irritating. Definitely aimed at younger readers, school age Years 5 and 6, possibly... more Year 7. My one major criticism is the naming and characterisation of a creature called an Incompetent. Described as a bit slow and have a brain that is a "bit soft", it's the butt of jokes by the other creatures and basically gets bullied by them, without any chastisement from any of the other creatures or even the humans. Not cool! I'm glad I read the book but it did rankle in parts and irritated in others. The story is ok, possibly even good, but the writing wasn't. Maybe it reads better in the original French. Needless to say I won't be going on to read the rest of the series and I shan't be re-reading the book anytime soon, unlike the Harry Potter books which will never grow old.
