review 1: This book was really popular in Croatia a few years ago (but there's no edition in English :O) so I decided to pick it up. I didn't want to buy it because I didn't know if I was going to like it so I borrowed first and second book from the library. As I read the first book, I got really bored. The heroine was too young and I sensed that the author was trying hard to make that book a new Harry Potter. However, she didn't succeed. I think that this book was utterly boring but since it was summer and I was too bored to do anything else, I read it whole. It wasn't that bad, I know, but it could be better. That's why I gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars.I haven't read the second book because, once again, it was too boring.
review 2: Caveat: I am way outside the age of the t
... morearget group and I read this book in the English translation. But ... a really good book should appeal to readers of any age and I've read (and thoroughly enjoyed) quite a few YA-novels in recent years. Like other reviewers, I fell victim to the 'next Harry Potter'-hype (in combination with Amazon's 99p-offer). Twice I was ready to call it quits while struggling through the beginning and about 1/3 into the novel I was just not prepared to waste any more time on it. The language is (maybe due to the translation) very weak, the characters and their interactions unconvincing, the plot has been done many times before and for me there is nothing here to make me care about what happens; looking at the four titles of the French originals, it's going to be stereotypes galore in the future anyway. less
