Scandal at the House of Russell
review 1: This is book 3 in the Scandal at the House of Russell. After her family is disgraced when her father ruins his business and commits suicide, Sophie Russell wants to follow in her sister's footsteps and find the the person who is truly responsible for their downfall. She and her sisters know that their father didn't do what they say he did. Her sisters have gone after two of their suspects, which leaves the third, Viscount Griffiths, for Sophie. When she goes to the Viscount's home looking for a way in, she finds that they are in need of a cook. Having a love of cooking, she steps right into the position. Viscount Griffiths, Alexander, is expecting a courtesan to arrive any day. So when Sophie arrives and acts like his new cook, he thinks that this is a cover story to expla... morein why his new mistress is in him home. He can't figure out why she keeps during down is attempts of seduction when he is paying her to be at his beck and call in the bedroom.Even though Sophie is still trying to find evidence that Alexander framed her father, she can't help but think the man she has come to know is innocent. As their attraction for each other grows, will Sophie ever learn the truth?I really enjoyed this book and the series it is a part of. This story could be read as a stand alone, but I think it would be much more enjoyable to read the three books in the series. You are able to see how the villain interacts will all three sisters. So one of my favorite parts of the story is that before ever going into Alexander's home she has been spying on him as we goes for his daily swim. This is so contrary to how a "lady" should behave during this time period, that it quite livened up the story. I love that the author had the servants figure out who Sophie was from the beginning and that they tried to protect her from being found out and Alexander's advances. I was laughing out loud at their antics. Thanks go out to Montlake Romance for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.
review 2: Oh boy. What a mediocre end to this trilogy. Very disappointing. This is the third book in Stuart’s “Scandal at the House of Russell” trilogy. The first two books were good. Not great, but pretty good. But this one almost seems like the author had run out of idea and was fulfilling a contract. If it had been a novella it might have been okay, but it was so heavily padded with inner thoughts and pages and pages of rumination that I know I never would have finished it if I hadn’t skimmed.Sophie is the third of the Russell sisters who were left destitute when their father supposedly embezzled from his own shipping company and then got himself killed in a carriage accident while he was – again, supposedly – trying to run away with his ill gotten gains.Sophie’s the one who always complains about not having their fortune or status anymore in the first two books. She’s also the one who likes to cook and bake. So, she manages to finagle her way into the home of their third suspect – the Dark Viscount – as the new cook. A contrived misunderstanding creates some hijinks that are somewhat amusing, but with such an insubstantial story otherwise it just feels like fluff. Alexander Griffiths is the viscount of the title. He’s got a dark past having been accused and standing trial for the death of his first wife. He’s got a cringe-worthy stepmother and a stepbrother who is straight up crazy. And that’s another problem; the contrivance of the whackos who are so twisted and evil that anyone who doesn’t see it is really pretty, darn dense. But there must be blindness in the face of obvious evil and/or madness or we can’t have things happen! Well, that’s not true, but it seems to be the go to in this book.I liked Sophie. She had the potential to be a heroine who was much more than she seemed. I also liked Alexander even though he behaved like a complete ass much of the time. Ultimately, the use of the TSTL contrivances to forward action ruined this story. The love scenes were Stuart-worthy, but the story itself was downright lame. One thing that would have made it much better would have been a long and detailed epilogue that told us what the future held for our heroines and their hubbies, but we got something far, far less than that. So, all in all, this book felt nothing more than phoned in. And for it to be the end of the trilogy made it that much more disappointing. less

This is the best of the three which, sadly, isn't great praise.
