review 1: The first half of this book was a bit choppy and I backtracked on several phrases to gain clear understanding. It just didn't flow well from a writing standpoint. The scenes jumped rapidly and at times I couldn't determine which character POV I was reading. Things did improve about halfway through. The plot was decent. I liked Shane from the beginning. Grant and Patience were a bit annoying by the end of the book and too stuck in the beliefs borne of a troubled past. There were interesting ebbs and flows in the action and some humorous moments (poor Horatio). I did have to suspend belief on a few things, but it didn't take me out of the story. I was a bit bothered by the speech and behaviors while the girls were on the ship though. The actions didn't seem to mat... morech the social standards expected of young women during that time frame. I did enjoy the book once the girls arrived in London, but wasn't sold on the ending. It was way too forced. The book was a fun, fluffy read and good for a getaway...and it was a FREEBIE on Bookbub. I'll probably read more books by this author.
review 2: I really wanted to give it 3 3/4 stars but, of course, you can't do that. I wanted to read a sea story for a change of pace and this was a free e-read on Bookbub. I love sea stories as a rule and the way this one started out, I was sure it would be fantastic. Lady Patience Kendall sailed to America to be married only her fiancé died before she arrived. Now, in order to finance her return to England, she has agreed to chaperone four American young women back to England to find titled English men to wed and has agreed to introduce them to the Marquess of Andover, the biggest prize of them all. Standing on the dock in front of the Knave's Secret while she waited for her charges, Patience and Capt. Grant St. Benedict had their first run-in, uh, meeting. The captain immediately realized that Patience was not named for her temperament! As Sophie, Angel, Rose and Grace arrived, the captain really wondered what he had gotten himself into. On top of that, the girls smuggled a puppy and a kitten on board as well! The crossing was dotted with the usual incidents and finally found the group in London where the Colonials, as the girls were known as, set the tongues wagging among the Ton. Poor Patience still needed the captain's help to marry her girls off. And she still needed to meet the Marquess of Andover herself so she can introduce him.Part One of the book was really good. They were at sea and it was funny in parts and dramatic in others. The interaction of the characters and the animals provided the storyline and kept it moving. However, in Part Two, many of the secondary characters and the animals just disappeared never to be heard from again. The new characters didn't have the depth or color the others did and the story seemed to drag. Several times the action seemed forced. I agree with the other reviewers about Patience's and the captain's marriage; it didn't ring true to the storyline. less

I like a good historical, piratey romance. Makes me sometimes wish I lived in those times.
