review 1: A delightful story! I was reminiscing about old pirate romances from my teen years and saw this in my TBR list. It was just what I needed. Enjoyable characters, light humor, and some "they shouldn't" moments mixed with plenty of "Oh. Yes. They. Did." moments. I liked the writing style, and read some new words... which is like an Easter Egg for me. The characters were fun and made me completely overlook the things I thought to be "off". I'm glad I stumbled on this series, and I look forward to reading the next story, too!
review 2: I picked this up from BookBub because it had been awhile since I'd read a romance and wanted to try it out. While I wasn't entirely disappointed, neither was I satisfied. Most of my issues with this book stem from inconsistency with
... more the characters. I felt them to be spontaneous in a way that wasn't 'expected.' (Yes, you can expect spontaneity as a consistent trait). That made them not quite believable. While I didn't hate them, and still wanted to find out what happened, I didn't ever feel a good grip on who they were. There were many events that were just too convenient to add any strength to the plot, also. Things, and characters, popped up out of nowhere, which gave me an apathy to the characters that made me not care much for their story lines. The drama with Grant's father? Meh. Too little, too late.Oh, and a sailor traveling with an unknown infant/toddler across the ocean on his own? Not buying that one. The ending disappointed me, I will say. There was some good buildup/romantic tension that completely fizzled out. SPOILER ALERT: forcing the two to get married at the end was a horrible decision on the author's part. Horrible. It went against all their revelations up to that point and completely marred my view on the book. SPOILER OVER.Despite how poor this review makes it sound, it was an enjoyable read. There are grammatical mistakes, but Blair keeps the story constantly moving forward, so I didn't find it boring at any point. I'm still on the fence over whether I'd try the next book, but when the hankering for a romance hits, I wouldn't turn her down at this point, so it's looking optimistic. less
