Ice, Ice Nothing but Ice, Wherever You Go Only Ice

For a truly untypical vacation, while all your friends are looking out for warm destinations to escape the winter gloom, head up north, within the Arctic Circle, to Lapland, this large stretch of land spanning between Norway, Sweden and Finland, considered as Europe’s last wilderness. It is no cheap destination, but it can be made affordable by avoiding travel to Norway and by making the best out of many options for low cost transportation and even opting for hostel stays.

Igloos are not just for Eskimos!

One unique way to appreciate this freezing area is to stay at one of the igloo hotels in Finnish or Swedish Lapland. If you don’t want to freeze, consider going to Kakslauttanen ‘Igloo Village’, which is a 15-minute drive from the small resort town of Saariselkä in Finland. It is heated to a nice 20 degrees Celsius and you can peer through the large glass panes of the igloo hut in order to catch a glimpse of the famous Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis.

Another absolutely unique experience is Sweden’s Icehotel. Can you imagine a hotel that melts every year and is rebuilt the next season with ice cut out of the region’s river? Icehotel was founded in 1989 in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi – 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, and is reborn again every year with the participation of some 40 artists who participates in rebuilding the hotel.
