review 1: A Countess by Christmas had all the potential in the world: mistaken identity, a house party, and a brooding Darcy-esque Hero. The problem is that it lacked Austen's character development and purposeful storytelling. The style was disjointed; to say Burrows was repetitive is an understatement. It felt like a short story padded out with pointless filler. Additionally, I wished the H and h had interacted more. The few times they were together were certainly the highlights of the book. On the plus side, it fulfills its role as a "Christmas read," as the holiday season is central. I would give it 2 1/2 stars (mostly because I liked the idea of the H) - but doubt I'll be reading more Annie Burrows in the future.I suggest skimming it in December for those looking for a q... moreuick holiday story.
review 2: I enjoyed this book a lot. The heroine is traveling with her 'aunt,' who has lost her money through a crooked business manager (shades of Madoff!), and must go throw herself upon the mercies of the family patriarch--who is not the oldest member of the family, but the highest ranked--an earl, and thus, probably the richest. He's considered something of a curmudgeon, who won't let any of his relations visit except at Christmas. When the hero (for of course, Earl Curmudgeon is the hero) and heroine meet, it is a case of mistaken identity on both sides, (each assumes the other is a servant (the hero dresses modestly)) and there are further mixups, resulting in the heroine treating him rather brusquely. And the hero finds he likes it, because she isn't groveling. Things snowball from there. It's a great, non-saccharine holiday story. less
